X Marks Spot the Station
Last night (Feb 23, 2013) Kathleen and I went out to catch the flyover of the International Space Station at 7:59 pm. Scanning the clear sky with no moon in the way (it was behind us, covered by trees) and just a few stars sputtering into sight, we saw what was for both of us the brightest and the longest in duration meteorite ever seen. Looking northwest, Kat spotted a truly fast-moving...

Schifrin' Soundtrack
Given that this review has been misplaced in the All-Music Guide database and superseded by a flippant description, I figured I might as well post the full review here….. written back in 2007 for AMG.
LALO SCHIFRIN: DIRTY HARRY [soundtrack]
Despite his classical training, Lalo Schifrin had worked with Dizzy Gillespie and was something of a jazz enthusiast. His groundbreaking score for Don...
BIGGER PICTURE: 2012 IN FILM
BEST NEW FILM 2012
Moonrise Kingdom
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this, having been disappointed and bored with Wes Anderson’s films after ROYAL TENENBAUMS. Joyous filmmaking, easy introduction for younger viewers to the true pleasures of cinema beyond cgi-beasts and spandex triggered explosions.
Runners Up:
Beasts of Southern Wild
Kind of Southern Werner Herzog, dramatic,...
I Feel Fine
12/21/2012
I’m happy to see the 2012 predictions coming true today. Not the apocalypse, but the shift in global consciousness. So maybe it’s only starting here in the US, but just looking at the violent rejection of the NRA Press conference today, and John Boehner’s “Plan B” throwing a pie in his and GOP’s face… maybe, just maybe the big ship of conservative...
"As Seen on the BBC"
I guess I can now sell my book cover work with an “As seen on the BBC” tag, thanks to James Oswald making the big jump from a self-published author to being taken under the wings of Penguin UK. You can spot covers for NATURAL CAUSES, THE BOOK OF SOULS and DREAMWALKER in this brief story:

Andalusian God
Another caricature drawing of a favorite film director: Luis Bunuel. “Mystery is the essential element in every work of art.”
ROGER CORMAN IS MAD
Here’s a quick MAD style caricature illustration of the King of B-Movies, Roger Corman, for a fun book cover project.
OSCAR BENGTS: S/S MIKKELI
This painting by Oscar Bengts has been in my family for decades and I’ve always liked it. Given that it actually provides some information of its probably accidental subject, I did a bit of research on it:
Cargo steamer S/S Mikkeli was built in 1904 by Lehtoniemi shipyard of Finland, owned by Baron (Freiherr) Carolus Wrede. It was ordered by wholesaler David Pulkkinen of Mikkeli. Using the...

The Prophet
Before I moved to this area, all I knew of Louisville was that it was the home of Hunter S. Thompson, Rudy Rucker, and Muhammad Ali. I’m still waiting for statues for the first two, but Mr. Cassius Clay got his more than well-deserved building. Kathleen and I visited it last Sunday. The weather was gorgeous, and the Muhammad Ali Center was a wonderful surprise.

HOUSEKEEPING
This is an informational test, given that posterous remains at best a fidgety platform. The last few posts Kathleen has made to her page appear to send no email notifications out, so I’m trying to use my mostly neglected ‘blog’ to see if it does the same. So you can go and check Kathleen’s latest posts at: http://kat330.posterous.com You can go and listen to (and...

Rock'n'Roll Career
Here’s yours truly in the early 1980s, as the lead singer of a garage (or cellar) band featuring the neighboring Penttila clan — Ville (on guitar), Kalle (drums) and Kaisa (background vocals). This photoshoot was the beginning and the end of my rock’n’roll career.

Storm Survivor
Had a handsome surprise this morning, just a couple of days after the devastating storms that flew over us to strike down just some 20 miles north of us in Henryville, IN. What looks like a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk was perched on our backyard fence, looking down on the bush that often houses several small birds as they take turns to gobble the goodies on our feeder. It stayed there a few...

Mystery Plane
Too busy to post much these days, I was nevertheless inspired one lunch hour at the office to come up with a doodle in the fashion of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth’s hipster drag racing Rat Fink t-shirt designs. To add a slight twist to the form, this one features a hopped-up flying saucer with a babyfaced driver inspired by cowpunk pioneer T. Tex Edwards.

Happy Halloween: Sci-Fi Savant is here
Happy Halloween!
Appropriately enough, we’ve just published a new collection of writings by Glenn Erickson, better known as DVD Savant.
Glenn is one of the most respected and best-loved online film reviewers. He was named “Reviewer of the Year” in 2004’s Rondo Awards Ceremony, and his work is equally loved and appreciated by the likes of Roger Ebert and Joe Dante.

Y They Removed the C from YMCASI
Less than two weeks after our local newspaper printed a “Jeers” item we had submitted on wasted watering at the Floyd County YMCA (heavily funded by Horseshoe Casino in southern Indiana), we received a letter from its executive director, Joe LaRocca, rescinding our 33-month membership at the facility. The primary reason cited was “since you are not happy here” with some...

For some months I’ve been working on a secretive new publishing venture from Scotsmen Allan Guthrie and Kyle MacRae. You can see some of the results of that work in this video from Blasted Heath:

Re-Covered
Given my lack of posts here and busyness business-wise, here’s a small sampling of more recent cover designs (including one that wasn’t used). Whether I’ll manage to recover as a semi-regular poster is debatable with the amount of work I’ve been juggling in the past several months, but at least I’ll try and post more samples. See the full gallery on Posterous ...
